The original Cyprus cedar decking is very tired and the seams are splitting. It was treated with Cetol years ago and has turned an ugly orange. We had originally planned to replace the existing decking with Sapele. Our preference was teak, but availability and cost lead us to settle for Sapele. Clint and Asa had feelers out for Burmese teak and Edensaw was able to procure some. Clint and Asa lobbied to utilize teak for the new deck despite the cost ($41 a board foot) and I agreed. They went to Edensaw this week and hand selected the boards that will be used. Our plan is to leave the teak unfinished and allow it to go grey.
Clint has processed / cut all the foredeck and spur beams and they have separated the house from the existing deck structure.
the teak has been delivered and will be resawn to a depth of 3/8’ by 2” wide for the decking. There will be two layers of 3/8’ marine plywood underlay to assure deck strength and watertight.
