I visited Nonchalant and the crew at the Port Townsend yard yesterday. I had a good chance to see all the work that is completed and it looks great. We spent time discussing interior layout and finish work. The house is being attached this week and soon after the shipwrights will begin planking the hull! We discussed what would need to be done on cabin side repairs and decided that varnish on the saloon cabin sides would expose the repairs and we would not achieve the appearance standard we have set. Taylor did a computer mock up of what it would look like to paint the saloon cabin sides while leaving the wheelhouse, aft cockpit and trim pieces all varnished brightwork. Somewhat to my surprise, I actually prefer the look as I think it accentuates the lines.

I also visited the boathouse in port Angeles. All the “junk” and belongings of the prior owners have now been removed and it is ready for Nonchalant.

Taylor has been working on fabricating the fuel tanks. The pieces were machined by ACI.

the side decking is also complete with two layers of plywood sheathed in fiberglass. The teak decking will be cut and installed when the hull planking is complete. the new shear plank is especially beautiful – don’t you agree??

new sills have also been crafted and installed. They are padouk – a teak substitute that we are using in areas that will grey out ( like the deck). The teak we were able to source is all being used for decking.

It is going to look awesome! So look forward to seeing it on the water and the smile on your face as you enjoy it.
So wonderful to see the progress. The mock up of the painted saloon cabin sides is amazing, and an exciting hint of what is to come. It looks sharp, and totally agree it makes the lines of the boat pop. Anything that makes future maintenance is always a billy bonus!
Great updates – please keep them coming!
Thanks for following Pete. Hull planking begins next week…!
